In particular, when shooting at2x magnification with the OM System M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5 Macro IS PRO, the tip of the lens is about 6.5 cm / 2.5 inches from the subject. At 1x magnification, this distance increases to 9.5 cm / 3.7 inches. And they *did* shoot the 90mm at macro distances, including closest focus, with and without 2x converter, and they show fullsize images, which very much support the lpmm results. The Olympus 90mm f/3.5 is a telephoto lens by all measures is a suitable replacement for most 200mm f/4 applications.

Lenstip should not be taken that seriously. Their extreme opinions (praise or criticism) and overuse of charts give them an air of authority, but they largely ignore practical aspects such as rendering, real-life usability or sample variation. In this case, I doubt that they tested this lens at macro distances, which is how it will be / should be used. M. The extended 90mm focal length allows macro photography at greater distances from the subject as compared to the Olympus 30mm and 60mm macros (or any other shorter focal length macro for that matter). The larger gap allows better positioning of artificial lighting and configuration of the tripod. This is one of the sharpest lenses I’ve ever used. I was capturing details I never knew existed on animals I have photographed countless times for years. Even after cropping my images significantly, the details remained clear. In fact, the lens is sharp enough that the OM-1’s 20 megapixel resolution was the limiting factor for sharpness, rather than the glass.

If you want to photograph a lot of macro photos in low light however, be aware that the autofocus performance can be sluggish in Super Macro mode. The autofocus can also be rather loud. And while I was surprised at how sharp the photos turned out, the nature of such a close-up lens can mean pushing the sharpness slider a bit further in post. I preferred images without the teleconverter because getting a sharp shot with the 2.0 was difficult, so most won’t need to add the teleconverter to this lens. Tech SpecsMy reasoning is that an M Plan Apo 10x with 200 mm tube lens already fully utilizes the resolution of a 20 Mpixel Micro 4/3 sensor. By pushing down the magnification with a 90 mm tube lens, you do get more than twice the lp/mm in the optical image (the total number of lp across the field of view of the objective remains the same, but the field of view shrinks in absolute size). The optics project an image containing much finer detail on the Micro 4/3 sensor, but the sensor was already at its resolution limit with a 200 mm tube lens and cannot record any more detail.
