Of course that happens, but its a weird stumble through setpieces, as Sharpe rushes through a series of objectives.

I loved that his wife Teresa was a Partisan commander in her own right, while the small band of riflemen under his command was also filled with interesting characters. Bernard Cornwell’s latest (2023) Sharpe adventure Sharpe’s Command places our hero at the battle of the Bridge at Almaraz, 1812 – as usual, based on historical events. Cornwell's strict Protestant upbringing informed the background of A Crowning Mercy, which took place during the English Civil War.

If you enjoyed any of the previous Sharpe books I think you would like this book and if you have never read any of Bernard Cornwell’s books and are a fan of Military Historical Fiction then I would recommend this series. Nice to see his murdered wife alive again as Bernard Cornwall fills in gaps in this 23 book narrative. Wading waist-deep in shit to scrape mineral deposits off the walls, Still, they are French, so they possibly don't notice.

If the French are stopped from crossing the bridge, the British would be able to destroy the Fort they intend to.So when, the dust still settling after the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington needs a favour, he turns to Sharpe.

As other reviewers have mentioned Sharpe is either addressed as Major or captain sometimes by the same person during the same conversation. There is one new character, though how close to the historical person the portrayal is I don't know: Lieutenant "Cupid" Love.

Crowbarring him in actually makes the main plot less clear – I have no idea what really developed from it. here he says my favourite quote, talking about the quality of British gunpowder against that of the French: "You're using British powder? But they're rapidly outnumbered, enemies are hiding in plain sight, and as the French edge ever closer to the frontline, time is running out . Folio commissioned Hokyoung Kim for the artwork, while the late author’s wife, Wendy Benchley, provides a fascinating new introduction. There are smaller things like Theresa not having a rifle and asking for one, yet she should have one by this point. However, Cornwell has stated that it will not be about Thomas of Hookton from The Grail Quest or any of his relatives.
