I was worried things would veer into cheesy territory, but it never got beyond the kind of campy that had to come with this kind of story.

The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. Early in the book Bobby meets up with her girlfriend, Elaine, a young woman who refuses to be seen in public with Bobby. I get the impression that the early 1960s (pre-sexual revolution) setting is a spoof, in the way that Mad Men is too, on the resurgence of conservative cultural values. Our sex-ed curriculum contained no mention of homosexuality, so everything I knew about the subject had come to me in bits and pieces through the middle-school gossip line. Little does she know that in her new job as Games Mistress at Metamora Academy, she will unearth more than one girl's hidden abilities and spur some ardent rivalry between pupils and teachers, both on and off the hockey field. These books can be quick reads, though I wouldn’t know because I would read aloud to my husband before bed. The more I think about it the more a detective lesbian mystery sounds hilarious: “Sarah Smith, Lesbian Private Investigator” 🙂 I definitely think I will be picking up this series. I was not a good softball player, and my lack of skill meant that I was placed permanently in the outfield where the ball rarely came my way.

This series is very spoofy, and each one is about a different career: secretary, gym teacher, debutante, landlady. How to integrate “Angle,” a frustrated teen with divorced parents who are of different faiths, with the other girls. And when you teach something as basic as gym, you can always tell them to do laps when you run out of material. it still very much captures the 50/60s pulp novel style and I did love that several characters and locations from previous books popped up. I was particularly amused by the bar scene where another woman wants to make eyes at Bobby and Bobby, oblivious, only wants to talk field hockey team dynamics.Coach Marino gave us a pep talk before we got off the bus, reminding us to swing fast and to always keep our eyes on the ball.
