Description

A tool that I’d recommend to every practitioner to use in counselling and psychotherapy independent of their preferred modality. I particularly like the theoretical explanation mixed with superb, doable activities/exercises and copyable handouts. The second edition of Draw on Your Emotions contains a new section that explains how to get the most out of combining the activities in the book with these cards to encourage meaningful conversations and take steps towards positive action.

Also something that can be used as personal therapy to help you reflect on things in an interactive way. There are only one or two pages I find even remotely appropriate for working with school aged children (or anyone, for that matter). This book might be better for someone working with adults who have some pretty hefty issues in their past but even so, I find the activities encourage rumination and negativity. I work with students aged 5-13 in a school setting and I had hoped this resource would be somewhat lighthearted with a bit of an art therapy focus.Dr Margot Sunderland is Director of Education and Training at The Centre for Child Mental Health London, Senior Associate of the Royal College of Medicine and Child Psychotherapist with over thirty years’ experience of working with children and families. Providing a series of photocopiable illustrations, the book is a source of effective readymade material.

Nicky has also achieved major commissions nationally and internationally in mural work and fine art. The cards will not go out of date as I imagine they will illustrate life’s difficulties that are timeless. This is an essential resource for therapists, educators, counsellors and anyone who engages other people in conversations that matter about their relationship to self, others and life in general. To have images that are so evocative will enhance the dialogue and give opportunities for all involved to tickle the imagination and make more sense and help the children digest their emotional responses to life situations that cause them such pain and difficulty. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. This revised and updated second edition also contains a new section on how to use the superbly emotive The Emotion Cards (9781138070981) to facilitate deeper therapeutic conversations. A very useful A 4 book for people working with children and young people with social/emotional problems.

Margot is an acknowledged expert in her field and her passion to make such important understandings and ways of working with troubled children accessible to ordinary people - parents, teachers, support workers - is manifest in the old excellent editions. Helps to promote a new clarity of thought as a first step towards positive action and bring seemingly huge, unmanageable and insoluble problems into a new perspective. Dr Margot Sunderland is Director of Education and Training at The Centre for Child Mental Health London, Co-Director Trauma Informed Schools UK, Founding Director, Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (academic partner of University of East London), and Child and Adult Psychotherapist with over thirty years experience. There are worksheets for many different feelings and emotions with useful guidelines on issues to raise with each each sheet which can be photocopied and used to build up a folder for the child/young person. However it became clear from the introduction that this book uses emotions cards which are mentioned in the descripton but nowhere to be seen. Built around five key themes, each section contains a simple picture exercise with clear objectives, instructions and suggestions for development. She is the principal artist at The London Art House and has illustrated over 20 books, which have been published in many countries. Dr Sunderland is the author of over 20 books in child mental health, which collectively have been translated into 18 languages and published in 24 countries.

I am a student and this is an investment but I am disappointed as I cannot start using the book stray away and this may double the cost. The cards are designed to capture the deeper truth of how people experience their life, offering poignant descriptions for what someone may be feeling. There may be something said for catharsis but there's no hint of focusing on a client's strengths in this book, which is what I'd hoped for. This beautiful resource is also a perfect supplement to Draw on Your Emotions, Margot Sunderland¹s bestselling book. The book also offers opportunities to rehearse other ways of functioning by trying out alternatives safely on paper. This wonderful resource removes the stigma associated with poor literacy problems by allowing students to access situations via visual means. I volunteer as a counsellor in training and I have found this product a great resource to help clients draw on their emotions.
