It’s easy to compare Blood on Satan’s Claw to some of the classics — for example Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The books in question are David Evans-Powell’s monograph of The Blood on Satan’s Claw and Brandon Grafius’ treatment on The Witch. Easily digestible and vivid in its description, I highly recommend this book for people who want to start reading folk horror. These are followed by a section discussing the film’s main characters, that features some interesting analysis of not only the family and their flawed existence but even Black Philip himself. I’ve developed a taste for seeing the differences in the landscape and the wildlife during a downpour, so seeing a parade in the rain is an interesting prospect.

More recently his career as a composer has come to the fore, with a symphony, song cycle, opera and the musical The Gothic Game. Prior to its appearance in The Blood on Satan's Claw, the church had been used as a location in The Witches (1966).

The Blood on Satan's Claw premiered in New York City in April 1971, and was subsequently released in London on 16 July 1971. If Blood on Satan’s Claw, The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General are the classic unholy triumvirate, The Witch is one of the titles that fits the bill as their modern equivalent, alongside films like Kill List, November, In the Earth and Midsommar it sits at the forefront of the Folk Horror revival. I'm not sure, but the mystery and uncertainty sometimes feels a little jarring rather than pulling you deeper in.

The Blood on Satan's Claw (or Blood on Satan's Claw) [a] is a 1971 British supernatural period folk horror film directed by Piers Haggard and starring Patrick Wymark, Linda Hayden, and Barry Andrews. He has written poetry, plays, radio plays, short stories and novels, but specialised for a number of years in writing and directing for film and television. My favourite part of the book was how Wynne-Simmons contrasts pastoral imagery with the rot and decay of the land beneath the green and pleasant surface.
