Description

When the player has played their turn, they flip over a card of the bot deck and follow what the card says.

If you choose to build part of the Cathedral, pay the costs for the next step as shown on the board and then move your marker into a free space at that level.Tools can add some interesting abilities to power up your apprentice, such as allowing an apprentice to count as having all three skills needed to construct a building. Suddenly I was not paying taxes, happily spending coins on the black market, and paying off debts like no mans business. You can visit the Guardhouse on a later turn to free any prisoners of your colour, and release them back to your board to use again later, and it’s a brilliant mechanism. These represent shady dealings that offer you resources for a loss in Virtue, the third concept of the game. The game offers the same fulfilling choices as Raiders of the North Sea, while upping the stakes with implementation of the Virtue track.

Architects of the West Kingdom is what you get when a designer takes a very good board game they’ve already made and figures, you know what, I’ll now do something similar, only better. It’s once again all about worker placement, only this time around instead of raiding coastal villages as a Viking, you’re building cathedrals as a 9th century French architect. There is a clear sharing of concept between the way Apprentices in Architects and how Crew in Raiders of the North Sea work, allowing for the same team-building mechanics that made Raiders such a hit. Shuffle the Apprentice deck and deal one card into every space on the board, leaving the remaining cards and the Debt cards near the board.Until I played with more shady characters like Hugo, who starts with a lot of his workers in jail and with a questionable virtue to boot.

That might mean your third worker in the Quarry nets you three pieces of stone, instead of one if it was your first worker placed there. Construct various landmarks throughout his newly appointed domain and remain virtuous, or be found in the company of thieves and black marketeers! I wasn’t sure how well a deck of cards could play a game like this, but it was actually fairly challenging. If you’re not careful you might find half or more of your workers are cooling their heels in a stony jail cell.

However, Architects also carves its own niche in the worker placement genre with its unique implementation of the genre’s mechanics. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone actually run out; but I have seen players collect up their own meeples from the board OR pay the hefty cost to retrieve their workers from other player’s boards. I’ve always enjoyed worker placement games, but this took it to the next level with the worker investment. It might feel awesome to say ‘I go to the quarry and get six stone’, but that’s something people are going to notice.

Repeat this until all players have selected three cards, placing the remaining cards under the Building Plans deck. It involves placing “one or more pawns on a play surface to claim the right to do a specific action.

All this is to say that the visual design of Architects benefits from its compatibility with that of Raiders even if the first impression might be jarring. In addition to including components for an extra player, Age of Artisans adds the new Craft Cards, a dual-layered Guildhall Board, two new Player Boards and a variety of new Apprentices and Buildings.
