However, as many discussions about Rodin and his sculpture, “The Burghers of Calais” take place in this novel, I’m pleased that I’ve seen it in person (even a copy of it) so recently. I enjoyed another encounter with Armand, learning a bit more about his family history and following his investigation, however, I found previous books a little more mysterious and, yes, interesting. MY THOUGHTS: Louise Penny's murders are always just a little 'off the wall', and the murder in A Rule Against Murder is no exception.

Closed off and highly judgmental, Beauvoir is the polar opposite to Gamache, though is able to extract needed information to help secure an arrest. The storm eventually moves on, leaving behind cool breezes in its wake, and everyone goes back to bed.The subject of the sculpture, and the cause of the turmoil of the family, is first husband and father of the children, Charles Morrow. Fair, lovely, and charming, she married a wealthy man, but is undergoing a divorce after his fraudulent investment practices came to light, and caused a very public scandal.

The murderer took Julia’s life in a blind moment of rage, for everything he and his family lost in one of David’s early investment failures. Bert Finney is trying to show his support to his wife, but the gestures are swallowed up and unseen by a grieving mother. And while we may love to dislike the detestable (with the exception of Bean) Morrow-Finney clan, they are all instantly recognisable as people we know or know of. Since he came from Julia’s area of Vancouver, I felt that it was as likely as not that his parents had lost a lot of money in Julia’s husband’s Madoff/pyramid scheme.

The murder investigation becomes a journey through history, memories, broken relationships, bitter sibling rivalry, childhood hardships and buried secrets. Gamache’s reaction to mothballs is an example of a negative or traumatic memory without a visual image altho he still remembers that night vividly. Located in the Equitable Building in Manhattan, Minotaur Books publishes bestselling and award-winning crime fiction ranging from thrillers and suspense to traditional mysteries. The interview with the sculpture artist doesn’t reveal anything conclusive, except that Bert Finney knew his best friend, Charles Morrow, better than any of his children did.
