The Goldsmiths Prize was established in 2013 to celebrate the qualities of creative daring associated with the University and to reward fiction that breaks the mould or extends the possibilities of the novel form. The judges for this year’s prize are Tom Lee, Maddie Mortimer, Helen Oyeyemi and Ellen Peirson-Hagger. So there are bits of bastardised French and German but that’s what Polari is – bastardised Italian mostly, with bits of Hebrew and cockney rhyming slang. Richard has just been shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize and we're delighted to be collaborating on this Special Edition t-shirt. co, courtesy of Verdant Brewing Co, featuring Charles Baudelaire, Bellabrusco, Tetley’s Imperial, The Lexington, and much more.

My English teacher read it out to the class but from that point on, kids being kids, other kids would come up to me saying: “Oh, have you written any novels recently? A lot of the Beats were aiming to transcend poverty or find bliss outside the material stranglehold of modern America. Photograph: Karen Robinson/the Observer Richard Milward photographed at home in south London, March 2023.Sentence by sentence, I want to create a kind of rush in the reader, whether that’s through humour, or something unsettling, or an unusual turn of phrase, or the rhythm of the words. This design is printed onto white or blue denim super soft 100% Organic Cotton as usual, and hand printed in Glasgow. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately from the article and its talk page, especially if potentially libelous.

I love the poetry of Charles Bukowski, Richard Brautigan and Allen Ginsberg and it seems so much more vivid now that I’ve witnessed up close the vast disparity between America’s haves and have-nots. Novak’s Polari is rooted in Polari as it was spoken in the 60s but it’s by no means a watertight time capsule. In the lead-up to the announcement of the Goldsmiths Prize 2023, Richard was interviewed in the New Statesman by Ellen Peirson-Hagger, judge and assistant culture editor.

It was a brilliant mix of people and a time of real togetherness but I hid my writing like a secret vice. Raised in Guisborough, Redcar and Cleveland, he attended Laurence Jackson School and Prior Pursglove College, then studied fine art at Byam Shaw School of Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.

Here is a novel that lays bare the depravity of human impulse, whilst testing the limits of language and form with masterful ease and reckless glee.

Milward's novel is about a struggling publishing house, Glass Eye Press, that has been contacted by the mysterious Raymond M. I started writing and sent stuff to Canongate because they’d published Children of Albion Rovers and they sent a really positive rejection quite soon after, saying: “There’s no way you’re 12! Working at Royal Mail is almost like being paid to be at the amusement arcades, firing parcels into postcoded mailbags, but at its worst it’s like prison labour, tipping mail-sacks on to a belt for seven hours, trance-like. In the lead-up to the White Rabbit event at Verdant Brewing Co’s taproom in Penryn, Cornwall, Richard spoke to Matthew Shaw for Verdant’s Brewing Folk podcast, soundtracked by French yé-yé, My Bloody Valentine and Lush tracks chosen by Richard.
