The unit itself has the usual Ender 3 plastic extruder, although it’s slightly improved on the one that originally came with the printer; the main update is the addition of a brass liner to the filament port, which should fix any wear problems. I have two ender 3's and have fitted this on both ,really easy to fit ,and nothing had to be changed in settings to get it printing, apart a bed level. Since most of my prints these days are functional prints, I really haven’t tuned the printer for the best quality. It fits perfectly although the cabling is in the way a bit so be careful when you start testing because if you get it wrong, oops, something will break. Also, thanks to there amazing quality control, the extruder mount has the wheels spaced too far apart so now the whole extruder wobbles.

I just cut the connectors out and soldered the proper connections in place and it works perfectly now. I still can fine tune the Cura settings, but the direct drive has allowed me to print faster with fewer problems.In fact they were so universally awful that I decided to hold off until I found an integrated system that might actually work. There’s the fully assembled carriage, and a small bag containing an extruder motor cable and some tools. Tip: The installation takes no more than half an hour, and you don't have to make any changes to the firmware in the process! This direct drive upgrade kit is an official Creality part, and as long as you’re confident enough to open up the printer’s electronics box and start rewiring the motherboard it’s a straightforward upgrade. Nothing was coming out the nozzle, and it was bunged up so thoroughly that I couldn’t pull the filament out.

At this point I mounted the CR Touch sensor head on the new print head, then started sorting out the cables from the head and extruder. If you already have a direct drive setup this probably doesn’t have much to offer, but if you’re still using a standard Bowden tube setup it’s definitely worth considering.

One caution if you do get this and that is that it may take some time to tune the printer back to the way it was. In my last post I mentioned that I was planning to fit our Ender 3 with an integrated hot end and extruder.But unless you're sticking to print speeds so low you hardly need it, it's still better to run a bowden with LA/PA than without. I mainly use ASA filament and this upgrade brings a huge improvement in the quality of the print and brings the standard much closer to my other printer which is a Prusa MK3S.
