Taylor and Hairsine reunite for the last chapter in this fan-favorite franchise, DCeased: War of the Undead Gods. Days later in the Rylex System, an alien approaches patrons in a nearby bar, seeking any noble warriors. As for the art on these pages, you can see a bit of change as Trevor Hairsine and Lucas Meyer work on other reunions, making me wonder if the pages changed. At this point, the "oh no, [blank] got infected" twist is past the point of having the meaning or impact it had early in this storyline. They pull out all stops for this conclusion to the DCeased world in some of the most ambitious ways, and I loved it!

Meyer does get some great pages of script in his portions, especially in a fantastic moment with Cyborg – I’ve seen it before in Tom Taylor’s Justice League/Power Rangers crossover, but it looks way better here. So after freeing him, they reluctantly join forces with the lord of Apokolips and author of much of their suffering. However, none of these superficial aspects do much to save the morbid storytelling or maddeningly distorted artwork.Furthermore, what makes it worse is the use of her home of Kandor and the other Kryptonians without involving her. In the anals (I know that may strike you as being incorrectly spelled, but I assure you, it’s correct) of DC blunders, slim, emo Lobo has to be one of the more inexplicable ones. I can’t wait to see him unleashed next issue, as Lobo’s minor appearances have been teasing us throughout the back half of this series. I think one of the main reasons I enjoy Taylor's Elseworld comics is that I'm always surprised by the choices he makes.

Please note that Gabe's opinions are his own and don't always reflect the opinions of Weird Science as a whole. Still, someday it would be great to have Taylor play more with the heroes of Gotham and bring his incredible characterization skills to those interactions and narrations. Throughout the majority of the DCeased trilogy and spinoff titles we’ve seen Damian’s growth be a sub-plot in this franchise. The DCeased Universe as a whole will easily go down as one of the best stories in DC Comics modern era.

Tom Taylor gives excellent interactions with some memorable phrases; for example, Damian tells Cyborg, “I’ve been talking to death” – even Cyborg has to respect the power of those words. We see the citizens of Earth 2 trying to escape the invasion of the Undead, and it doesn’t look too promising.

While I think the moment centers on a very silly plot device, it says a lot about the birth of hope within hopelessness. It then cuts to the 5 years prior to finding the cure that many friends and loved ones have died due to infection, leaving many heartbroken. Again the only draw back is how we get from peace to destruction back to peace, it's like Taylor woke up remembered all the characters not yet utilised and got to writing this. The Batfam (or, ya know, what's left of them by the time the story really starts) really stand out as amazingly crafted characters with clear character progression. The magic he has created in the DCeased series is one that any comic collector who started in the 1970s loves to read.It still has distorted inconsistencies in the facial renders, generally unpleasant renders, and sparse underdrawn backgrounds.

The heroes get Superman back in the first issue, but then things just get worse and worse until the sudden but inevitable conclusion. The plot is dull and lacks the tension of the original Elseworld's tale, using standard superhero tropes like enemies getting beaten with minimal difficulties and zero consquences, the character moments are generic and tacked-on and everything seems to be happening for no reason at all. The "DCeased" series has always been a solid one to me, and I have loved that within all the zombies and death in these stories, there was always heart, emotion, and an amazing understanding of DC lore, and this final entry in the series was just more the same.

It's like the Anti-Life virus wasn't enough and the creators had to come up with a half-baked explanation for everything. I don’t know that this was a five-star book until the last 3 or so issues and then I was blown away! This creative team has crafted an entertaining adventure and capped it off with a hopeful ending based on a tale rooted in death.
